In honour of Black History Month, we’re hosting an extra MUFF screening in February! On February 22, Reel Girl Talk (MUFF’s discussion-based spinoff series) will present Dear White People.
This 2014 satire follows Sam, a film student (played by the amazing Tessa Thompson) who, along with a few of her peers, goes up against the racist traditions and structures of her Ivy League school through a variety of mediums and platforms. While the film is most definitely a general blast, it’s also an important watch, as it openly discusses race, gender, and sexuality and how they all intersect. What’s more, it was produced by a number of remarkable women of colour, including Stephanie Allain, Effie T. Brown, Lena Waithe and Mel Jones.
(Oh, and ICYMI, the film has been adapted for Netflix and the series is set to come out this April, with its World Premiere being held at SXSW in March.)
Before the screening, join us in the lobby of the Imagine Cinemas Carlton for the usual MUFF pre-show fun, including the traditional photobooth and themed #MUFFMix. And following the film, stick around for the “Talk” portion of the night: a critical discussion between The Great Black North co-host Devon MD Jones and filmmaker Alicia Harris, who will share their opinions of the film as well as how the black female experience is portrayed on screens small and big.
