MUFFDates: TO Fall 2016!
We've kept a little quiet on our fall announcements but it was for a very good reason: we've been planning two new MUFF series! And the first one kicks off this September! More exclamation marks!
When I started MUFF, I was very keen on programming "fun" films. I wanted to do this because I felt there was, and is, so much criticism surrounding women in the film industry, particularly with what makes a film "feminist." I wanted to focus on celebrating films and also I really like photo booths and that's literally how The MUFF Society came about.
Still, even with all of the celebration and sparkles, I knew we could do more. One of our first baby steps was to start highlighting local talent through the addition of a short film program. I absolutely love mini MUFF and all of the amazing filmmakers we've been introduced to through it. And with that being such a fun success, I knew we could keep building and growing MUFF even more. And so the MUFF team started brainstorming new ways to engage our community and draw more attention to women in the film industry.
For our new series, we are focusing on bringing two of my favourite things to MUFF: engaging conversation about film, though Reel Girl Talk (produced by Emily Gagne), and documentaries, though HER-story (produced by Jennifer Kidson)! Each series will run three times a year and our regular MUFF screenings will now take place every other month. Read on below for more info on the two new series and our usual October MUFF screening!
Reel Girl Talk Presents 9 to 5 - September 21
It's time to talk about what we should all expect from our employers and employees: being treated equally .... with a little dignity and a little respect! After screening this sisterhood-in-the-workplace comedy classic (starring feminist goddesses Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton and co-written by Patricia Resnick), we'll present our first Reel Girl Talk panel, which will feature assorted working women discussing discrimination and mistreatment in the workplace (film-related or otherwise).
Legally Blonde - October 12
Let's be honest: we were all inspired to try to get into Harvard after seeing this film. And raise your hand if you've practiced the Bend And Snap. Come celebrate endorphins, female friendships, and feeling comfortable enough to use legal jargon in every day life. WE OBJECT!
HER-story Launch Screening - November 16
HER-story is a unique documentary series. Drawing from our female-led film team criteria (#MUFFApproved), we will be screening films directed, produced, filmed, and edited by female talent. While the subject matter itself does not have to explore women's issues or themes, we are looking to highlight passionate filmmakers who are willing to share their behind the lens experience with our MUFF audience. We should be announcing our first documentary selection soon!
