This August MUFF’s getting nostalgic with Lesli Linka Glatter’s Now and Then, a slumber party staple about friendship, growing up, and buying a motherfucking treehouse.

The screenplay was written by Pretty Little Liars showrunner I.Marlene King. And just like Pretty Little Liars, this film is jam-packed with beautiful besties and more than a few secrets! Although bookended by the amazing Demi Moore, Rosie O'Donnell, Melanie Griffith, and Rita Wilson, the real heroes of Now and Then are their younger counterparts: Gaby Hoffmann, Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, and the late Ashleigh Aston Moore, who star as the spunky girl gang that we all wanted be! The plot may center around the girls’ attempts to raise enough money to buy their own treehouse, but the film is more about so much more: maturation, coming to terms with death, first kisses, loving your friends, and putting pudding cups in your bra! So, bring your besties and grab your tissues as we take this sweet journey back to 1970’s Indiana together.

Annnd we’re back!! MUFFxSF returns this month with Susan Seidelman’s classic Desperately Seeking Susan, the story of lost identity in the pre-Internet world. Rosanna Arquette plays Roberta, a restless housewife, daydreaming of a couple, Susan (Madonna) and Jim, who communicate through personal ads. Fantasy becomes reality when their lives intersect in a mish-mash of directions.

In true 80's form, there's murder, mystery, fashion and big hair, and not in the least, there's Madonna as the cool girl we all want to be.

Also, amateur magicians are welcome to perform any known tricks involving doves.

Since MUFFxTO screened Bring It On in March to an overwhelmingly ecstatic audience (we love ALL of you), we decided we weren't quite done with the whole cheerleading thing just yet.

Research. Coffee. Research. Milk. Cookie. Decision. Conclusion: But I’m A Cheerleader.

But I’m A Cheerleader features everyone’s favourite OITNB actress, Natasha Lyonne, teamed up with director Jamie Babbit for her first feature film. The film uses the story of a young woman finding her sexuality to explore the social construction of gender roles and the artificiality of gender construction (highlighted through superb costume and production design using artificial textures in intense blues and pinks).

Basically, this isn’t your typical chick flick. Okay, it has to do with love and chicks—but...well, here. This questionnaire ought to clear things up:

Are you a vegetarian? Do you love Melissa Etheridge?
Do you like to wear baggy clothes and play softball?
Do you tape pictures of girls all over your locker and love watching cheerleaders dance?
Did your mother get married in pants?

Assessment: If you answered yes to any of the questions above then you’re probably a lesbian. And we know just the place to send you!

But I’m A Cheerleader takes us on a hilarious adventure with Megan, a high school teen who believes her life—that of a well-liked cheerleader with a football player boyfriend—is completely normal. Her tightlipped Christian parents think otherwise (ugghhhhhh, parents) and call for an intervention: Megan has to go to True Directions, a sexual conversion therapy camp so she can be cured of her lesbianism.

We're super excited, thrilled, tickled, honoured, and every other positive verb to be co-presenting this screening with the Toronto LGBT Film Festival Inside Out. This year's festival takes place from May 26 - June 5 but we're joining the party a little late because GUESS THE FUCK WHAT, the entire month of June is Pride Month! It's Canada's first ever Pride Month; one, about time and two, we can't wait to celebrate. Learn more about Pride Month in Toronto here!

MUFF IS DOING WHEN HARRY MET SALLY! Nora Ephron penned the story of two friends, Sally Albright and Harry Burns, who met on one very long drive from Chicago to New York. The two have an immediately strong connection even though Sally seems to hate Harry almost instantly. In the coming years, they continue to run into each other at bookstores or airports, and slowly form an extremely deep and meaningful (although occasionally murky) friendship. Through all their ups and downs, one thing can be certain: that no one will ever want that wagon wheel coffee table.

This quirky, hilarious, and almost aggressively adorable movie is going to be so much fun to watch with an audience because with so much wit sewn into almost every line, it is endlessly quotable. Basically, you have to come, because… WE’RE GONNA BE 40! (In 39 years.)

This month MUFF has teamed up with Etheria to bring you Toronto MUFF fans a night of ‘80s b-movie horror and the darkest, creepiest, bloodiest female-directed Canadian shorts we could find!

Just like the good ol’ slumber parties of our youth, we’re ready to put on our best jammies, grab some snacks, and watch those sleazy, campy horror flicks we used to pluck from the rental shelves based on VHS covers alone. From director Jackie Kong, we will be screening a double bill of The Being (1983) and Blood Diner (1987)!

A decapitation-loving mutant toxic waste monster? Check. A town that is more concerned with threats to potato crops than threats to themselves? Double check. Academy Award winning actor Martin Landau as a shady scientist? Yup. How about a talking brain in a jar? You betcha! The resurrection of an ancient goddess of blood and lust? Of course. Dismemberment, cannibalism, and eyeball mutilation? Heck yes! Nude aerobics AND nude martial arts? You are definitely in for a night you won’t forget!

This month MUFF’s getting spirited with Jessica Bendinger’s Bring It On, the classic tale of friendship, cheerocracy, and what to do when it’s cold in here.

Precious baby angel Kirsten Dunst (who probably holds some sort of MUFF award at this point for Most Films Programmed) stars as Torrance Shipman, the new head of a championing cheerleading squad who has recently discovered that the ruthless ex-captain Big Red stole all of their most successful routines from a different school. Torrance now has to race to figure out how to compete at the upcoming championships, and deal with all of the guilt that comes with performing years worth of stolen routines, all while dealing with some confusing feelings for a new dude.

We will try our very hardest to not scream out cheers as the movie plays, but this movie is so much fun that it will have you dancing around your living room for days practising your very best spirit fingers.

February is Women In Horror Month and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to show Mary Harron’s classic homegrown (shot in Toronto!) horror, American Psycho.

American Psycho introduces us to Patrick Bateman, a slick-haired finance bro who has the same problems as any yuppie of the ‘80s: his business cards have not yet reached perfection, he can’t get a reservation at the “it” restaurant Dorsia, and he has a seemingly endless amount of video tapes to return. He’s also likes to dissect girls.

Bateman and his merry band of coke-snorters have their origins in Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name, but are brought to life by the direction of Mary Harron. Harron co-wrote the American Psycho screenplay with actress Guinevere Turner and together they amplified the intelligent satire, biting humour, and aestheticized gore, making it perfect for the big screen.
