Ready for Round 2 of Reel Girl Talk, the MUFF Society discussion-based screening series? Well, we’re coming into 2017 swinging with RGT’s screening and discussion of knockout 2000 flick Girlfight!
Directed and written by the exceptional Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation) and featuring an all-in performance by Michelle Rodriguez, Girlfight is a true champion of both Women in Film and women involved in (whether that’s personally or professionally) sports or sports entertainment. The film follows Brooklyn-based teenager Diana (Rodriguez in HER FIRST ROLE) who is training to be a boxer and battles to be taken seriously by both her loved ones and competitors because … you guessed it … she’s a *GIRL*! While the film was praised pretty much immediately upon release (it won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance!), Kusama initially struggled to get the intentionally subversive take on genre often overtaken by men made, with many production companies wanting her to cast a white actress in the lead role as opposed to a Latinx one. (Thankfully, she refused to throw in the towel and Maggie Renzi, Sarah Green and Martha Griffin eventually stepped in to help make her vision a reality.)
Yeah, if this isn’t an empowering film that deserves to be both seen and discussed, we don’t know what is.
Meet us in the lobby at 6 p.m. for some specially themed pre-show fun, a pumped-up MUFF Mix, and limited edition Girlfight and RGT buttons. And be sure to stick around after the screening, as we’ll be hosting a discussion in which two women (to be announced very soon!) will speak critically about the film, how it compares and contrasts to their own experiences, and what other stories on the same theme they want to see on screen. We’re excited to share that for this and future RGT events, we’ll be working alongside Community Partner Reel Girls Toronto (it was love at first sight/words!) to highlight voices from various backgrounds, communities and age groups.
Be sure to check back closer to the event for more announcements, including additional partners, sponsors and details.
