Breakthroughs Film Festival 2020

Spring is always our favourite time of year because it’s Breakthroughs Film Festival time. When COVID and quarantine hit, we weren’t sure what was going to happen with the festival but lucky for all of us, Breakthroughs is moving online so we can enjoy the festival from the comfort of our homes.

17 films. 4 nights. Filmmaker Q&As. June 25-28. It’s going to be AMAZING. And the best part: you can get access to the whole festival for only $18! That’s like a dollar per film, where else can you find a deal as good as that?!

We love Breakthroughs because they are the only Canadian short film festival devoted to emerging women and non-binary filmmakers. 50% of this year’s lineup is BIPOC and there are films from all over the world. The lineup also includes our pal Alicia K Harris and her Canadian Screen Award winning (wooo!!!!) film Pick and past MUFFian and all around incredible gal Emily Gagne and her film Best Friends Forever.

The theme this year is TOO MUCH: stories that explore the ways in which women and non-binary folk are often seen as too much of something or not enough of something elseEach nightly program has a different focus (From The Outside, In The Family, What We Make For Us, and I Am My Home).

And tomorrow (Saturday June 20 at 12PM) don’t miss your chance to meet the BFF jury! BFF Co-Chair Robyn Citizen will be hosting a panel discussion with Kelly-Fyffe Marshall, Tricia Hagoriles and Sofia Banzhaf. The event is free and ASL interpretation will be provided.
