MUFFTix: A Woman's Work @ Hot Docs
I bet you thought we were done giving away Hot Docs tickets. Well you’re in luck because we’ve got one more giveaway and it’s going to be a good one!
As anyone who has seen Bring It On, we all know that cheerleading is way more than just waving pom poms around in the air and rhyming while clapping. It’s not easy and as Yu Gu's A Woman's Work: The NFL's Cheerleader Problem demonstrates, it can also be wildly exploitative. This documentary rips open the world of NFL cheerleading and exposes the discrimination and inequality that has been allowed to fester. You won’t want to miss this one, folks.
The cheerleaders of the National Football League put themselves through strict regimens, measuring waistlines and muscle definition, rehearsing their acts to perfection and often paying out of pocket for all their outfits and paraphernalia. Their dedication, hard work and team loyalty generate an astounding profit for the multi-billion-dollar corporation that shamelessly pays them less than minimum wage. Determined to seek justice for years of astounding inequity and exploitation, a group of women file lawsuits against the NFL, alleging gendered wage theft and egregious employment practices. Risking their careers and reputations, and ostracizing themselves from a tight-knit community of current and former cheerleaders, the women uncover a culture that has complete disrespect and disregard for the real worth of a woman's work.
It screens this Thursday May 2. For a chance to win a pair of tickets, enter below! We’ll be drawing the winners on Tuesday and notifying them via email!
