MUFFDates: TO Winter 2016/17!
What's this? What's this? Awesome movies everywhhheerrrreeeee! Yes, this IS the perfect time for a Nightmare Before Christmas reference because it's November, the perfect time to watch a Halloween/Christmas movie. Um. Yes. Anyway, if you're wondering what our winter film schedule is, we've got it for you!
This winter is all about music, boxing, vampires, and white people. Get it:
Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains - Wednesday, December 7
Written by Nancy Dowd, this cult classic stars a 16-year-old Diane Lane as Corinne “Third Degree” Burns, the leader of an all-girl punk band (including a 15-year-old Laura Dern on bass) who have minimal talent but rise to stardom on their wicked style, riot grrrl ideals, and a war cry that is embraced by an army of teenage fans: “We’re The Stains, and we don’t put out!” Co-presented by Musicale!
Reel Girl Talk: Girlfight - Wednesday, January 18th
We’re kicking off 2017 by getting back into the ring with Reel Girl Talk, our ongoing conversation series! This next RGT event will feature Girlfight, a film helmed by the awesomely outspoken Karyn Kusama (The Invitation, Jennifer’s Body) and centred on a young woman (played by Michelle Rodriguez!) who has to battle the expectations of her community and her family as she attempts to break into boxing. Following the film, we’ll host a panel featuring various female athletes.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Wednesday, February 8
Directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui and starring Kristy Swanson, this classic origin story has all the ass kicking, vampire staking, and truly scary cheerleading routines you need to celebrate this year’s Women In Horror Month. There’s even a little bit of romance (oooh, Luke Perry) for those who have Valentine’s Day in mind.
Reel Girl Talk: Dear White People - Wednesday, February 22
In honour of Black History Month, we’re hosting an extra MUFF screening in February. Reel Girl Talk will be presenting Dear White People with a co-presenter to be announced soon! This award-winning satirical dramedy (produced by powerhouses Effie Brown, Lena Waithe, and Ann Lee), follows a biracial film student (played by the incredible Tessa Thompson) who goes up against the racist traditions and structures of her Ivy League university through a variety of mediums and platforms.
And there you have it. Best winter ever? Best. Winter. Ever. We better see you at every single screening! As always, keep an eye on our social media feeds for updates about each screening.
