We all knew that this day was coming. It’s been on the horizon for longer than we can remember. And now it’s finally here—the day we recognize the patron saints of millennial childhoods: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Of course, for such a momentous occasion we had to screen a film that could give us something special, that could give us that can't-eat, can't-sleep, reach-for-the-stars, over-the-fence, World Series kind of stuff…
Rich and proper aspiring equestrienne Alyssa. Poor and orphaned tomboy Amanda. Identical, but unrelated. This is the reality of It Takes Two, the Olsen Twin’s highest grossing feature film. As the story goes, the pair meet at summer camp (a summer camp for orphans, founded by Alyssa’s father) and decide to swap lives in an attempt to matchmake their respective caregivers: Alyssa’s father (‘80s goofball Steve Guttenberg)—who is about to marry a child-hating golddigger—and Amanda’s social worker (Kirstie Alley, who was also starred in MUFF fav Drop Dead Gorgeous)—who won’t be granted the ability to adopt Amanda until she gets married (which is completely bogus, but that’s a whole other issue). We can also consider it a hometown flick, as much of the film was shot at locations in and around Toronto, including U of T, Empire Avenue, St. James Cathedral, and Southern Ontario’s own Camp Mini-Yo-We. Plus, it has one of the best food fight scenes in the cinematic universe!
It Takes Two was also penned by the fantastic Deborah Dean Davis, who has written for the likes of Steven Spielberg, Ivan Reitman, and Meg Ryan. She also wrote multiple episodes of Knight Rider, Magnum, P.I., The Fall Guy, The Incredible Hulk (TV series), and Star Trek: The Next Generationand regularly teaches writing seminars at UCLA.
We’re also super excited about our #miniMUFF selection this month! With the amazing young talent on screen in It Takes Two, we wanted to pair it with a short film filled with equally amazing young talent behind the camera! The Fortune Teller is a story of three young friends who underestimate the power of a paper fortune teller they find one day. The film is co-starred, co-written, and co-directed by four young aspiring filmmakers and produced through Young Moviemakers a youth filmmaking program in British Columbia.
As always, we will have lots to enjoy prior to the film: a photobooth with props, a playlist to get nostalgic with, and four incredible local vendors selling their wares! And be sure to show up on time because we will have a TON of amazing prizes to win!! So, come and celebrate Mary-Kate, Ashley, sisterhood, and summertime vibes with us and It Takes Two!

ABOUT THE MUFF SOCIETY
The MUFF Society (Monthly Underground Female Film Society) is a feminist screening series based in Toronto, (with prior pop-ups in New York City and San Francisco). We aim to champion women in film both on and off screen and we do this by programming films that have awesome female characters and/or have powerhouse female players behind the scenes: directors, writers, editors, producers etc. We are also an online community that aims to keeps the conversations about women in film flowing and supports and promotes other film events and initiatives which are focused on women in film.
