Reel Girl Talk x Black Women Film! Canada Short Film Night

The MUFF Society’s Reel Girl Talk screening series and Black Women Film! Canada are proud to present an exciting new showcase of short films made by Black female filmmakers.

Creators from across Canada were invited to submit their short films for consideration for Reel Girl Talk and Black Women Film! Canada Short Film Night. We are now proud to share that we will be showcasing the work of nine incredible Black female directors. Learn about the shorts films selected to screen as part of the event, which will be followed by a panel discussion lead by Black Women Film! Canada’s Ella Cooper, below:

BEAUTY
Directed by Magda Uculmana-Falcon
- A story about a Black girl discovering her internal beauty through self-care.

SPECTRUM
Co-directed by Christian Anderson and and Brittney Marvell
- A documentary that aims to unify a diverse section of people through one human attribute: skin.

CONTINUUM
Directed by Noncedo Khumalo
- An animated short exploring what happens when society’s rejects reject society.

MUNA
Directed by Keeya King
- Following Sierra Leone’s Civil War in 1991, Muna aims to put herself, and her community, back together by working at a rehabilitation centre for former soldiers.

HAVEN
Directed by Kelly Fyffe-Marshall
- As her mother, Janice, is doing her hair, Jada finds the solace to confess earth-shattering news.

HYPHEN-NATION
Directed by Samah Ali
- A conversation with five women, this documentary looks at what it means to be a black woman in Canada after growing up in a culturally-steeped home, both domestically and internationally, and how it influences one’s identity.

ALL DAY ALL NIGHT
Directed by Ayisha Gariba, Maya Morgan and Misha Louise Gilchrist
- A film that follows people through their day after learning about an incident of violence against a Black person.


ABOUT REEL GIRL TALK:

Reel Girl Talk is a discussion-based spinoff of The MUFF Society, a feminist screening series that is based in Toronto and champions women in film both on and off screen. In addition to screening films made by and/or about women, Reel Girl Talk encourages critical analysis of these works and the way they present issues these communities are facing. After each Reel Girl Talk screening, women from varying age groups, backgrounds, and experiences will be invited to compare and contrast the film they have just seen with their own lives.

Black Women Film! Canada is both a leadership program and collective of Black women filmmakers and media artists dedicated to forwarding the careers, networks and skills of filmmakers and media artists who are Black female identified of the Canadian African diaspora. Black Women Film! provides ongoing professional development opportunities for its growing community of emerging and established Black women filmmakers, spotlight Black and diverse women in film. BWF! partners include TIFF, CBC, CFC , NFB, Caribbean Tales International Festival and the Nia Centre for the Arts. Programs are made possible with support from the Canada and Ontario Arts Council.
