This month's Mini MUFF selection is Pearl Was Here, by Kate Marks.

There’s always something refreshing about a young woman discovering her inner-bad assery. Especially when it involves funky make up, crazy hair colors, and most importantly—sweat, bruises, and athleticism.

Welcome to Drew Barrymore's on-screen scrimmage delight: Whip It. It stars some of our favorite ladies ever (Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, and Juliette Lewis to name a few) and brought even more attention to the female dominated contact sport ROLLER DERBY. That’s right. A contact sport dominated by women. And it is NOT for the weak of heart.

Here at MUFF San Francisco, we encourage self expression in any form, so bring your most colorful eyeshadow, your brightest shades of hair, and the best derby girl/"Bad Blood" music video name you can think of (because, real talk, we all wish we could be in Taylor Swift's music video). We’ll have name tags so you can wear your bad ass name with pride!

We really think Roger Ebert nailed it about this movie:

"Yes, the movie has cliches. Yes, it all leads up to a big game. Yes, there is a character's validating appearance near the end. Yes, and so what? The movie is miles more intelligent than most of the cream-of-wheat marketed to teenage girls. Funnier, more exciting, even liberating”

Put on a pair of skates* and be your own hero and join us at The Vogue on September 10th! Featuring a photobooth, fun raffle prizes, and more! (*Uh, we mean that metaphorically. There is definitely no room for skating at the theater.)
