MUFF TO x Etheria: The Being & Blood Diner (April 22)
SUP PALS.
K, so, if you know anything about me personally you'll know that half of my life and work is dedicated to horror movies. I write for horror magazines and websites, I curate another film series which features horror movies, I have about 910,000 horror t-shirts and posters, and I work closely with horror films and festivals and this and that: the point being - I really like horror movies. So when Etheria Film Night's director of programming Heidi Honeycutt suggested we bring Toronto the craziest, bloodiest and schlockiest '80s Jackie Kong flicks The Being and Blood Diner, I was basically salivating at the mouth. We teamed up with Etheria for this PJ party double bill, and it was theeee best.
In case you haven't seen them: The Being is J. Kong's debut feature (which she made when she was only 23!!) following the goings-on in the small town of Pottsville, which is being terrorized by a teenage-boy-turned-toxic-waste-monster; and Blood Diner is a cheesy homage to Herschell Gordon Lewis' classic flick Blood Feast (often cited as the first gore film and thus a movie that is very near and dear to me). These movies are really good, you guys.

Alongside the two amazing main features (seriously, if you haven't seen these movies you are sorely missing out), we had a full block of mini MUFF goodness for the audiences. The Being was opened with Fish Out of Water by Kirsten Carthew, Mitten by Amanda Row, and Remote Viewing by Kristen Anderson-Sauvé then Blood Diner was opened with Grace by Karen Nielsen, M is for Makeover by Dara Jade Moats, and Madre de Dios by Gigi Saul Guerrero. These flicks are gross, funny, terrifying, and very, very bloody - thus perfect fits to open for Jackie Kong.
This month we had TWO MUFFtails, the Pottsville Pollution in honour of The Being and Goddess Shitar for Blood Diner, two tasty boozy slushie mixtures to enrich the viewing experience. In all of my life I will never enjoy anything more than a cold boozed up beverage and a really gross movie.

This month, as with like, every month, we had a million bajillion awesome prizes to give away. MUFF attendees had the chance to win:
- Slumber Party Massacre, Stripped to Kill and Night Patrol DVDs donated by MUFF, all amazing female directed films (Night Patrol is another gem of a flick by Jackie!)
- Coal Miner's Daughter donated a gift bag of gorgeous accessories
- The Candy Bar donated a delicious gift bag of candy + gift certificate to the shop
- The Beguiling: donated women-centric/woman-created books (Lenore: The Cute Little Dead Girl, Cooties! by Roman Dirge, Hellblazer: The Red Right Hand by Denise Mina, and Wet Moon by Sophie Campbell)
- Malabar donated $50 gift card (!!) to their store, which is costume rentals, dance outfits and makeup supplies
- Cursed4Life donated a variety of pins, magnets, necklaces, mini books, so much cute stuff!
- Fiendish Fancies donated some fab feminist and horror themed nail polish sets
and last but certainly not least... *drum roll*
- Etheria & Jackie Kong sent us 6x10 SIGNED photos
As if Jackie wasn't already a precious badass angel, she filmed two intro segments and a short Q&A with Heidi Honeycutt to play before the movies and after, discussing her experiences working on these sets and it was heartwarming, inspiring and awesome. Seriously, everyone should let Jackie be the wind beneath their freaky wings.
