For Sama (dir. Waad Al-Khateab, Edward Watts) has been making an impact since its premiere, having won awards at SXSW (Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary), Hot Docs (Special Jury Prize for International Feature Documentary), and Cannes ( L’Œil d’Or for Best Documentary). Variety praised it saying, “Simple in concept and shattering in execution, blending hard-headed reportage with unguarded personal testimony, it’s you-are-there cinema of the most literal order.”

Simply put, it’s a must-see documetnary. So if you weren’t able to catch this film at Hot Docs like we weren’t, you’re going to be just as excited as we are right now because the fine folks of JAYU are presenting a free screening of For Sama to celebrate seven years of programming. The screening is next Thursday, 4 July at Innis Town Hall at 7:00PM. Head on over to Eventbrite to reserve your free tickets and we’ll see you there!

For Sama is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her.
