MUFFTix: The Prison in 12 Landscapes + Mermaids

Does watching women-directed, Canadian documentaries sound like your idea for the perfect week? Well, we've got you covered then. One collab just wasn't enough—we're back together with our pals at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema to offer you a chance to win more tickets to two incredible documentaries.

The same week of our HER-Story screening of The Prison in Twelve Landscapes, a run of Mermaids begins at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema. It only makes sense to team up for a double ticket giveaway, right? RIGHT.

HER-STORY: The Prison In Twelve Landscapes screens at the Carlton Cinema on Wednesday, July 17 at 6:30pm, followed by a panel discussion. "The Prison in Twelve Landscapes harnesses the power of cinema in order to re-estrange us from a system that has become so common sense we don’t even see it any more, let alone question its purpose." Director Brett Story is generously joining us via technology as she is busy working at the Sundance Labs and in person we'll be hearing from Sinead Mulhern (journalist), Lindsay Jennings (former inmate and Peer Support Worker with the John Howard Society of Toronto's Reintegration Centre) and Mark Kerwin (Executive Director, KLINK Coffee). The talk will focus the larger social structures that surround the role of police and prisons in society and how "prisoner re-integration" perhaps isn't the problem we should be focusing on.

Mermaids screens at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema on Friday July 14 at 6:30pm, with director Ali Weinstein in attendance for a Q&A. From the event description: "Who doesn’t have nostalgic memories of mermaids from their childhood, whether it be Ariel or Daryl Hannah? Well, this Hot Docs favourite takes an endearing look at people united by their love of mermaids. Or rather, their love of “mermaiding”, which is to say identifying as mermaids." It sounds a bit out-there, yes, but take it from us: it is a powerful doc! We saw it at this year's Hot Docs Film Festival and were touched at how thoughtful it is and by how much care Weinstein treated the subjects.

It's not often (or ever) that you'll find the prison system and mermaids mushed together in a ticket giveaway, but we say roll with it. After all, it's all about supporting incredible, Canadian, female-directed documentary cinema. For a chance to win a pair of tickets to each screening, enter below!
